Try to delete the VM.  Then try reinstalllinig Ubuntu using " I will install the operating system later"  rather than "easy install".  Easy install is a bad fit for Linux distros.  Use an iso you downloaded or use the CD you burned from it.  The memory for the VM should be 1024 MB for optimal results.  Set the max hirtual hard disk size to 20GB. Select either Ubuntu for 32-bit or Ubuntu 64 for 64-bit as teh VM type.  WS should detect the ISO or CD as Ubuntu 12.04 (if not you have a bad iso - download it again and do a md5sum check on the image).  Once the Ubuntu GUI appears (it certainly should if you have followed these steps) then go to the VM tab and select install vmware-tools.  Follow the help documentation on how to install the tools (I'm not going to repeat  the help file).  Make sure you get to a terminal and run "sudo apt-get install build-essential"  After uncompressing t the tools tar files then run the .pl script  as the help says.
