Ok....I've discovered that smart card readers are filtered by defaul so you have to run this command on the Mac to at least get it to show up in the list:
sudo defaults write com.vmware.viewusb AllowSmartcard true
Now I can redirect the reader and drivers show up in the virtual desktop in device manager. However, the virtual desktop doesn't read the card for some reason. One step closer but still no success:(
