Can I get rid of virtual XP icons which appear on my Mac desktop?

I am a complete novice both to VMware fusion (I have version 5) and to Mac Pros.  I have set up on my MacPro a virtual XP environment.  Many of the desktop icons on my XP desktop also appear on my Mac desktop, which I would like to keep uncluttered.  I have no idea if I can remove them from the Mac without removing them from the XP desktop.

Any suggestions?
