Re: How to convert an existing WinXP boot disk?

VMware Workstation comes with the tools to handle such a scenario - you would create a new VM and attach the physical disk to it.
Then without starting the VM you use vmware-vdiskmanager to convert the vmdk you just created (thats just a textfile referencing the physical disk) into a regular vmdk file.

 

Then you can use Converter to configure that VM in a second step
