DUPs (resulting in terrible performance) when using a bridged NIC with WS 9

I am running Workstation 9 (trial) under WIndows 7 Ultimate.  The physical machine has 2 nics but only one is connected.  The guest OS is Centos 6.3 . VMWare tools have not been installed.

If I set the NIC to be NAT, everything works fine getting an IP from the Workstation DHCP server, but of course the linux VM can not offer services on my network.

If I set the NIC to be Bridged, the VM correctly gets its own IP from my DHCP server and now the services appear fine (e.g. SSH) but pings get DUPs that do not occur when using NAT and the network performance is terrible.  The pefrormance starts ok when doing a download of something (say yum update) but in just 10 or 15 seconds it drops steadly to zero and yum decided that mirror is down.  The "replicated physical state" option is OFF, but turning it on did not seem to change anything.

Any ideas?  There have been a few posts on this topic over the years but no clear resoution and those were mostly with earlier versions of Workstation.
