Thank you so much for that tip, was able to ping to one host with the intel nic however was not able to ping to second host that had broadcom nic even though esxi detected it and said it was connected. That led me on a path to find out that the broadcom bcm57781 driver isnt working by default in esxi, so I had to download an offline bundle and do an esxcli software vib install to get it working. Just rebooted the host and am now able to successfully vmkping the vmotion subnet. Thanks again
