This is a repost. I probably didn't word the subject well enough on the first post
I have been using Fusion user for 4 years now, however in an effort to satisfy my curiousity I looked into Parallels 8 to see what differences there are between it and Fusion.
Since I assumed running two virtual machine programs would present a problem I uninstalled Fusion and installed Parallels 8. The uninstall of Fusion was uneventful as was the installation of Parallels 8. After using it for about two weeks, I decided that I would stay with Fusion since Parallels afforded no real advantage in a Boot Camp world.
I followed the directions for removing Parallels from the Mac side as well as the Tools from the Windows side. I then reinstalled Fusion. Everything was back to where it was prior to my testing, or so it seemed.
I discovered some latency in the booting process as well as some garbage on the screen (on Windows startup) that was not there before I did my ill fated test. I then dug deeper into the Mac side and searched for everything Parallels and found a lot of stray files that the uninstall seemed to have ignored or missed, everything from plists to hidden folders in the library. I carefully deleted only those files that were clearly marked as "Parallels" files and folders. I tested the VMWare Fusion program and it seemed to work fine but I still had this nagging suspicion that all was not as "clean" as it was prior to the test.
Yesterday I finally got fed up with the slow boot to Windows 7 Pro and decided to look around the Windows registry. Boy, was I in for a surprise. There were over 600 entries of strings that Parallels wormed its way in and through the Windows registry. Fortunately I am versed in regedit and quickly cleaned out all the gunk from Parallels. My MBP appears to be booting just fine.
I am having one little problem on the Mac side that maybe you can help fix. On my task bar there is the BootCamp/VMware arrow. If I click on it, a drop down menu pops up with the Parallels icon (see enclosed image)
I cannot, for the life of me find the file or folder associated with this "Parallels Desktop (Mac)" listed program. Behind the drop down is a list of all files that have the exact string, "Parallels Desktop (Mac)" embedded into it. And now for my question.
What can I delete or edit to rid myself of that icon and listing?
For the record I am on a MBP (late 2008) 8GB RAM and using Boot Camp on an NTFS partition
