Have a look at: 
Prepare to Use a Physical Disk or Unused Partition
You may also have to use diskpart and set the disk offline too.
Note: I've seen posts that say on a Windows 7 Host it will need to be a separate physical drive, not a partition on the same drive Windows 7 is on.
