im looking for the solution for a very similar situation also. but ive got back all the same confusing answers.
our story in short:
- we are an ISP
- we have a data center
- we have decided to build a virtual server infrastructure on blade servers to provide VPSs and Cloud solutions to our customers
- we bought the servers and the VMware vSphere 4 Enterprise and vCenter Server licenses and not a single salesman or VMware specialist told us not buy this product, because it is not for HOSTING provider enviroments, and by the way it was a huge pile of money.
- it was at 2008, the cloud was only a buzzword. even there wasnt any product in vmware's portfolio with the name cloud.

Are you telling us that we cant provide a simple email service for our customers on our servers, by your hypervisor, because of this piece of crapy, lawfirm made sentence?
