The speed difference is also immense if you are using a USB hard drive. Using standard virtualization and assigning a USB hard drive to a VM the performance of a USB 2 or USB 3 hard drive is less than an old USB 1 hard drive. However, if you assign the USB controller to the VM via PCI pass through the performance of a hard drive attached to that controller is pretty much native. I use some USB 3 drives as backup devices and in order for the backups to finish overnight the USB controller has to be passed directly to the VM making the backups. I can't upgrade that box to ESXi 5.1 because of this bug.
