iSCSI MPIO network setup - how many NICs do I need?

$

Hello, I'm setting up a FreeNAS box on our network with iSCSI to store backups and other data. My question is about how to configure networking on ESXi.

According to Freenas docs and forum discussions, each Freenas interface needs to be on a separate subnet. The vmware iscsi mpio doc states "Enabling multipathing removes the ability to route to storage. The storage and the VMkernel port must have an IP address in the same network".

Here's what I have for iSCSI interfaces on all my storage devices:

FreeNAS storage - 4x1GB Intel NICs

Cisco NAS storage - 2x1GB NICs

IBM SAN storage - 2x1GB NICs

Backup server - 4x1GB Intel NICs (Vmware 5.5 vm running Veeam)

We have 2 Cisco 3560G switches, and all interfaces are divided up evenly between the 2 switches for redundancy.

So if I understand this correctly, if I want to use MPIO and be able to access all 3 of my storage devices above, my backup server needs to have 8 NICs? I was hoping connections to the various storage devices would be able to share NICs, and route traffic between VLANs which reside on the same switch. But if I follow the Freenas best practice and each NIC is on a separate VLAN, then it's impossible to connect everything unless I add more NICs. Am I right in that assumption?

Thanks much in advance!

SRM 6.1 vs Stretched Cluster (vMSC)

Hello,

A while ago were decided to use SRM for our disaster recovery tool for about 25 vms.  We use a mix of vSphere Replication and Array base replication (Currently using Asyncronous IP replication with a storwize v5000 and an older v7000).  It's been working well for us but the topic of stretched cluster keeps coming back in our internal discussions mostly to be able to balance workload from our main site to our recovery site.  After upgrading everything to version 6, I am now able to move VMs from one vCenter to another but I have to move storage also...  It works well, but the it would be great if we could simply use a standard vMotion and use the replicated storage instead.

We've recently acquired 2 new v7000 with hyperswap which offers syncronous replication.  I was told by IBM that in order to move workloads between our 2 sites, I have to eliminate one vCenter thus get rid of SRM.  This redbook also suggest a one vCenter topology.

From what I read in this SRM Whitepaper for version 6.1, I can have best of both worlds by configuring SRM with stretched storage.

I was wondering if some of you have configured SRM with stretched storage.  I'm curious to know how I could present the same volume to 2 vCenters.

Thank you!

Add vCenter 6.5 Identity Source via PowerCLI or Command line

Is anyone aware of anyway to add a AD as LDAP Identity source inside vCenter 6.5? I have found articles related to 6.0 but those utils don't seem to exist in 6.5. Also I haven't had any luck finding a way to script a service to start as automatic (i.e. Auto Deploy & ImageBuilder) so any help would be appreciated.

Update:  We were able to get this resolved with a VMware vRA support engineer. Needed to re-register assemblies into SQL DB in order for installer to un-register and upgrade them.  Most likely occurred from mutliple install attempts that had failed for other reasons, but left these asemblies as already registered and the installation didn't like that.  Ran following commands:

Looks like that recommendation is only for all flash, I´m running hybrid. From the blog:

I’ve deployed or am going to deploy a Hybrid vSAN cluster.  Am I impacted?

No, the revised sizing guidelines are applicable only to All Flash

Hybrid will continue to use 1:10 caching to usable capacity ratio

I think I found a solution to backing up the VMWare virtual servers.  How can I backup all the VMWare Host itself or at least the configuration?  (No backing up the VMs just the Host itself)

Are there any straightforward simple solutions for this?

ImageBuilder to apply 5.5 U3_Patch10

I currently have a working auto deploy solution and custom image based on Cisco UCS platform drivers etc. I need to apply the vib updates from Patch 10.

Using ImageBuilder to update a custom profile.

I know using i.e. add-EsxSoftwarePackage -ImageProfile ESXi55U3_P10_ver4 -SoftwarePackage ????? allows me to add specific vibs i.e. new Cisco drivers etc.

How do I update the custom image with all of the ESXi base and other updated vibs and dependencies at once. Can I?  Can i simply state the added software depot zip?

That one step seems to be missing from many of the communities I have searched.

You can create an Active Directory Policy to join VMs to a domain during the provisioning process. You need to add an Active Directory endpoint in vRA using an account with privileges to add computer accounts to the domain. You then configure this AD policy on your business group and can target a specific OU in the AD structure.

Gracias

Trying to deinstall VM Workstation, get The MSI '' failed. - The folder path 'Virtual Machines' contains an invalid character.

I was trying to create snapshot in VM workstation, keep getting "Error taking snapshot: One of the parameters supplied is invalid". this happens on all VMs - So I thought it must be something common to all the VMs, i.e. the installed VM workstation code so trying deinstall Workstation prior to reinstallation, but keep getting:

The MSI '' failed. -

The folder path 'Virtual Machines' contains an invalid character.

Googling around returned nothing - have you got any ideas?

Stretched storage integrations with SRM is different from vMSC (what IBM is referencing when they mention transitioning to a single vCenter).

Stretched storage integration with SRM requires specific storage from your array vendor that supports not just synchronous replication, but also the ability to present the same LUN/datastore to both sites/arrays as read-write at the same time AND an SRA that will work with that array and SRM 6.1 or later.

For details on stretched storage in the SRM documentation see here: Site Recovery Manager 6.1 Documentation Center

For compatibility information see: VMware Compatibility Guide - sra

Note that there is a filter option for stretched storage. When I search for IBM and SRM 6.1 w/Stretched storage I see the Storwize SRA ver 3.2 and 3.2.1.

How is your network setup? Is your VSAN on a 1Gb network? vMotion on a different NIC?

If they're on the same NIC, you'll probably see congestion on 1Gb. If you're VSAN NIC is using 1GB, you'll probably see congestion more often than you'd like.

Hello,

Just quickly to understand your current setup, so you have 1 host and 1 vCenter running in VMware workstation? or do you have the host running on VMware workstation and vCenter on the host?

So with the latest ESXi 6.5 version you will get a host web client, if you go to https://IP Address/ui  it should take you to the host web client. Is that where you are getting the error?

You can try adding the following line to your .vmx file for the VM, this should automatically answer any questions when the VM boots:

msg.autoAnswer = "TRUE"

If this is set as True, try it as False, seen a few articles about this but they say different things and I'm currently rebuilding my lab and have 0 hosts to try it out!

disable the ability to connect and disconnect devices or to modify device settings in VM

Hi,

I  still did not get how user can disable or connect device to VM if he is using RDP or SSH and has not any access to vCenter console. is this :"

isolation.device.connectable.disable = "TRUE"

isolation.device.edit.disable = "TRUE"  "

can be used if the user has rights on vCenter to edit VM settings ?
