Too many vmdks!! :0

Hi, I installed Windows 7 on my Mountain Lion 10.8.2, VMWare Fusion 5.0.2. I hardly have to use Win 7 untill recently, then I noticed one thing There are over 20 vmdks in the Windows 7 VM directory one  of them is as larg as 2G, one is 1.96G and one is 1.63G then smaller ones are 495M, 328K to the smallest one 2K. And they are named Virtual Disk-s001.vmdk, Virtual Disk-s002.vmdk....

It seems like every time I use it a new vmdk is generated. Why are there so many? can I delete them? When I install Win 7, I didn't make any changes to the default VM  settings. Was it something I needed to do to avoid all these vmdks?

Thanks.
