Re: "VMWare Tools can be updated" yellow exclamation mark?

$

Is it really possible that out of 49 subscribers on the VMWare Workstation Player sub-forum who have looked at my question, that absolutely nobody knows how to "update VMWare Tools"?

Is this message legitimate?  Is it because I just updated Workstation Player to 15.1.0 and need a similar update to VMWare tools (newer than 10.3.5, which I thought was the latest version as of a few weeks ago)? If so, where do I find that update?  How do I get it, or trigger it to happen automatically, or what?

The yellow exclamation mark doesn't seem to impact any operational functionality, but it screams for me to do something. And I would be glad to do it, whatever "it" means, if only I knew how.

Is there not one "expert" who knows what I should do here to resolve this issue?

Thanks again in advance, for any help you can provide.

Can you take a snapshot of your FreeNAS VM manually? From that error, it sounds like it's trying to quiesce it and the underlying storage can't keep up fast enough.

No idea. May have some idea if you show what and how you're passing commands to the CLI upgrader.

Re: Best way for redundant path to shared storage (NFS)

I'm wondering if it didn't failover because for some reason the server thought the link was up?

That's usually what happens, yes.

I wonder if it always thinks the link is up in a chassis because the nic in the server blade is connected through to the chassis backplane, where the 16 SFP+ ports are (this is a 4 blade, 2U chassis).

Sometimes there is a setting on the chassis interface adapter (whatever Dell calls it) that allows the card to pass through the L1 topology to the virtual functions it supplies thereby telling ESXi its vmnic is down" when there is a port disconnect. It sounds like this may not be happening here. Different vendors do it different ways and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

So I was reading on changing failover from Link Status only to beacon probing.  However I've seen some documentation that recommends THREE nics, and not all connected to the same switch.  Well we are using all of our 10 gig nics so thats not an option.  Any way beacon probing would work reliably with just two nics?

No, beacon probing is not an option for you here because otherwise you can create a host of problems.

You need to be extra careful because this is the storage network and not just a VM network. Even though it's NFS (a file-based protocol), you still need to guarantee a reliable network path. Port channeling these is also not a good idea. If your storage supports NFS 4.1, that may be something to look at as there are some built-in functions that make error recovery better. Otherwise, I'd look at what happened with your Brocade adapter and why it didn't inform ESXi the vmnic was down. Test with an extra blade (if you have one) and experiment with some cable and SFP pulls on the I/O plane. When there is a link down situation it should pass that through to ESXi. If you see it doesn't, you need to fix that first.

Urgent help - I cannot get results out from an external script

Hi All.

I have a PS script which runs on an Script server and targets remote machines. Everything works fine, however the issue i am having is that I cannot get the output from my script back. I have tried several ways to do this, the closest thing I have so far is to use the getXML method, it dumps out a lot of XML but all I need is just the filename which my powershell script returns.

I would be grateful if anyone can explain to me how to do this correctly, I will need to do this a lot in the course of my work, sometimes my Ps file will be expected to return multiple values etc, but most of the time it will be a single value.

The above is the output when I run the workflow.

The bit my Ps script returns is C:\TEMP\ServerName_SQL_Configuration_File_2019_05_22_11_23.ini and this is what I want to capture into a variable. and pass onto another workflow

En anglas / In English:

It sounds like you may have data corruption due to your host freezing, and while you have active snapshots no less. First thing I'd probably do is restore from a recent backup. If you have been naughty and don't have one, you may need to look at possible (I stress the word possible here because it's not guaranteed) data recovery options. You may seek the council of our resident data recovery expert, continuum, as he could provide further advice.

Re: Enabling fault domains on existing vSAN cluster

Hello George,

"I have been considering enabling fault domains on my vSAN infrastructure, as all servers do not reside in the same rack."

How are the servers distributed?

Just so you are aware, each node essentially acts as a Fault Domain(FD) by default with none configured:

e.g. in a 4-node standard cluster, a RAID1,FTT=1 Object will be distributed data+data+witness components on nodes 1,2,3 and as Objects are added and space assigned this evens out data component usage across all available nodes (e.g. creating another Object will place data witness+data+data on nodes 2,3,4 as dictated by the relative free space on the nodes in tandem with placing the components over the minimum number of FDs to be compliant with the Storage Policy).

So, with a 4-node cluster you likely (and logically) might have 1 of the following:

2x2 - in which case creating 2 FDs won't work here as you require 3 FDs for RAID1,FTT=1 component placement (or 4 FDs for RAID5,FTT=1).

4x1 in which case there is no benefit to defining explicit FDs as per my first point above as if your Objects are compliant with their Storage Policy, components are distributed in this manner anyway.

In a case of a larger cluster e.g. 16-node being divided into 4x4 FDs then yes there would potentially be a huge amount of resync, maybe not comparable to the extremes like changing the structure of all Objects (e.g. changing from RAID1 to RAID5 or Stripe-Width) but definitely something that should be done out of hours (and depending on the hardware/infrastructure and size may take days).

There is of course the capability in vSAN to throttle resync cluster-wide and prevent such activities from causing contention of bandwidth/capability if they do require to be run during regular hours (as some businesses have 0 'out of hours').

Performance Monitors

Just curious if anyone has any idea why under Performance > CPU I'm seeing the server itself as well as two Packages when monitoring the CPU usage. Server itself is a brand new R440 running VMware Essentials 6.5 U2

Mixed VSAN/External SAN Hybrid

$

Our Chief Engineer threw out an odd thought to me and I wanted to bounce it off some of the experts here on the blog.

Up Front:

Our systems are extremely SWaP constrained, no room for additional nodes or power for nodes in custom (i..e. shallower than normal) racks, so to increase our VSAN capacity we need to use some very high price 15.3 TB SSDs. Also All our VMs have multiple vmdks to support multiple drive folders

Question:

As a way to increase capacity without using the more expensive drives could be to limit the VSAN datastore to the "C" drives of each VM for the OS, and map all other drives to an external SAN with all flash (our studies have shown that the drives in the AFAs are cheaper than the drives used in our servers)

I know that a hybrid like this is supported by VMware, but not sure about how mixing them within VMs would affect performance.

So I'm looking for any advice/thoughts from some of the experts on this design possibility.

Thanks, Paul

Once I get to the next page, it always has me add a student.  I add myself.  It goes back to the main page.  Rinse/repeat.

Any ideas of what's going on???

This isn't a question for the VMTN Communities but for VMware Education as we cannot do anything about the situation for you.

SWaP

Size, Weight, and Power ? I've never seen this acronym before so am venturing a guess.

While the idea of splitting out disks would work, there are some things to consider:

  1. You now very likely increase the troubleshooting time and MTTR for a given VM because you've spread its storage interests among different systems, so an issue with one system will impact everything to a greater or lesser extent (because you now have all [potentially] VMs with at least one disk stored there).
  2. You will have different performance characteristics as a side effect to saving on capacity.
  3. If using a VADP-based backup application, taking snapshots is now more complex (and some apps don't take kindly) because vSAN uses one disk format while your external VMFS-based array uses another.

This use case is really almost like the "I-need-a-swap-VMDK-datastore" argument that sounds attractive on paper but, in reality and the givens that are failure scenarios, can come back to bite you in the rear.

Thanks for the helpful tips on how to post forum messages, but this is the Education forum.  I read the other posts before asking here, and I'm asking here in the first place because I haven't received any replies from the contact info number on the mylearn site itself.

Since I'm probably not the only one having the issue, I figured it's either due to a current problem with the site, or that another student on the education forum might be familiar with the same problem.

You already have a discussion here which predates this one and in which you're receiving help. This looks to be the exact same question.
